My Buffy Rewatch Rankdown & Statistics
So over the course of the last four or so months, I watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer in full for the third time in my life. As I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to ratings and reviews, I decided to grade each episode I watched and subsequently rank them in competition with one another. Having just finished, I now have a schema that represents my opinions on what I view as the best tv series of all time, and I'd love to share it with all of you. I hope it prompts some discussion and I hope you enjoy the breakdown!
**this was also done for Angel!

First, Some Explaining

  • These episodes are all judged on a scale. For the most part, even a lesser Buffy episode is a great episode of any other tv series. Something rated as a C here is not considered as a C-episode of television. The only genuinely bad episodes are the few rated as an F.
  • Every episode rated as a C or above I'd consider genuinely good. Flawed, yes, but still an hour of television ripe with entertainment and/or value.
  • I separated all of the two-part episodes. Since two-parters tend to have episodes with variations in quality, I thought it was appropriate to let a weaker half drag down a stronger half
  • Not that there's anything "objective" about my opinion, but I'm genuinely rating what I perceive as the quality of the episode. Rewatchability, fun, comedy, etc. are all qualities I enjoy in an episode, but it isn't what would necessitate a higher grade. Since I like every episode in the C-range and above, I'm likely to at times want to rewatch it. I may watch Homecoming more than Dead Things, but it doesn't mean I think it's a better episode. In fact, the grades are probably a bit more geared towards the more series, darker, and uncomfortable episodes of the series.
  • Annoyingly, the only grade missing is D-. I guess there's no episode to define the quality gap between The Puppet Show and Teacher's Pet

The figures in column 2 are the average score of each episode in the row's respective season. Of course, sometimes a season adds up beyond the sum of its parts and the statistical average of something might not indicate its comparative quality. That being said, the way the scores panned out happened to be precisely how I would personally rank the seasons. Therefore, column 3 ranks the seasons both on my data and personal opinion. The fourth column ranks the seasons relatively to my opinions on Angel seasons as well (not based on any statistics, it’d be impossible to compare the seasonal statistics across both series’)

2017.06.02 15:52 NateRoberts 115 new Clinton Secretary of State emails, previously believed missing, have been released by Judicial Watch. Contents range from deeply embarrassing to downright criminal.

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch today released 2,078 pages of documents revealing more instances of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sending and receiving classified information via an unsecured email server.
[...]
The new documents included 115 Clinton email exchanges not previously turned over to the State Department, bringing the known total to date to at least 432 emails that were not part of the 55,000 pages of emails that Clinton turned over to the State Department. These records further appear to contradict statements by Clinton that, “as far as she knew,” all of her government emails were turned over to the State Department.
[...]
[One] email exchange, which involved allegations of the theft of foreign aid by Bangladeshi banker and major Clinton Foundation donor Muhammad Yunus, started with an email from an unidentified person to State Department official Melanne Verveer, who forwarded her exchange on to Hillary Clinton, who then sent it on to Flores, Cooper and Band.
Yunus was accused of embezzling $100 million from the Grameen Bank he founded and was removed from it, although the charges were never proven, and Yunus reportedly returned the money. Subsequently, Clinton’s State Department was accused of threatening IRS action against the Bangladesh prime minister’s son in an attempt to stop a Bangladesh government investigation of Yunus.
[...]
In May 2010, Abedin tells Band that she has “hooked up” people from the Russian American Foundation with “the right people” at the State Department after Abedin received a request from Russian American Foundation Vice President Rina Kirshner, forwarded by Clinton Foundation donor Eddie Trump (no relation to President Trump).
The Russia-American Foundation was staffed by Clinton political supporters and operatives, received over $260,000 in grants for “public diplomacy” from the Clinton State Department, and its leadership was supportive of Obama’s Russia policies.

There is so much more... I just wanted to give a flavor of it. The last item is particularly interesting, given the decision by the Hillary campaign (taken within 24 hours of her loss) to paint Trump as a Russian puppet.

http://www.judicialwatch.org/press-room/press-releases/judicial-watch-newly-released-emails-reveal-classified-information-transmitted-hillary-clinton-unsecure-server-clinton-foundation-employees/
(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch today released 2,078 pages of documents revealing more instances of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sending and receiving classified information via an unsecured email server. They also show Clinton’s daughter Chelsea and others involved with the Clinton Foundation receiving special favors from Huma Abedin, the former secretary’s deputy chief of staff.
The records were obtained in response to a court order from a May 5, 2015, lawsuit filed against the State Department (Judicial Watch, Inc. v. U.S. Department of State (No. 1:15-cv-00684)) after it failed to respond to a March 18, 2015, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request seeking: “All emails of official State Department business received or sent by former Deputy Chief of Staff Huma Abedin from January 1, 2009 through February 1, 2013 using a non-‘state.gov’ email address.”
On December 6, 2010, Secretary Clinton shared classified information with non-U.S. government employees Justin Cooper, then-aide to President Clinton who helped manage Hillary Clinton’s unsecure email system, and Clinton Foundation director Doug Band (neither of whom held security clearances). The email instructs her aide Oscar Flores to “print for Bill” (presumably Bill Clinton). The email exchange, which involved allegations of the theft of foreign aid by Bangladeshi banker and major Clinton Foundation donor Muhammad Yunus, started with an email from an unidentified person to State Department official Melanne Verveer, who forwarded her exchange on to Hillary Clinton, who then sent it on to Flores, Cooper and Band.
In a similar instance on March 14, 2011, State Department official Maria Otero emailed Clinton information about the Grameen Bank/Foundation that was again deemed classified as Confidential by the State Department and redacted under FOIA exemption B1.4(D) – “Information specifically authorized by an executive order to be kept secret in the interest of national defense or foreign policy … Foreign relations or foreign activities of the United States, including confidential sources.” Clinton then responds to Otero using her [email protected] account and copies Abedin on Abedin’s unsecure email account, [email protected].
In May 2010, Ben Ringel, whose donations to the Clinton Foundation Judicial Watch previously documented, asked Abedin to intervene in an employment dispute on behalf of a USAID employee. Abedin agreed, telling Ringel to forward the woman’s documents to her official State Department email account.
In a May 21, 2011, email exchange sent to Abedin’s unsecure account, then- Ambassador Princeton Lyman sent information relating to his conversation with South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit that is also redacted and classified as “Confidential.”
On July 17, 2012, Abedin forwarded to her private email account for printing a call briefing sheet for Clinton’s upcoming call with Joint Special Envoy Kofi Annan, which was classified Confidential and redacted under FOIA exemption B1.4(D).
The new Abedin emails also reveal additional instances in which Clinton’s then- scheduler Lona Valmoro forwarded the former secretary of state’s detailed daily schedule to top Clinton Foundation officials.
The new emails also reveal a number of favors that were requested and carried out.
On Mon, May 10, 2010 at 9:41 PM, Huma Abedin wrote: Hi Rina – wanted to connect on meeting at state department. Eddie trump passed on your email. Will be in touch soon From: Rina Kirshner Sent: Wednesday, May 12, 2010 11:29 AM To: Huma Abedin Subject: Re: Eddie Trump/Doug Band Ms. Abedin,

The Russia-American Foundation was staffed by Clinton political supporters and operatives, received over $260,000 in grants for “public diplomacy” from the Clinton State Department, and its leadership was supportive of Obama’s Russia policies.
In July 2011, when Chelsea Clinton, using the alias Diane Reynolds and the email address [email protected], was planning to fly to Germany to see the U.S. women’s soccer team play, her travel agent asked Abedin to confirm that Chelsea’s travel costs could be placed on her parents’ credit card. In response, Abedin tells the agent that she can “stand down” from making arrangements to get Chelsea to Germany, as Chelsea and Bari Luri, Chelsea’s Clinton Foundation chief of staff, would be made part of the “official delegation” going to the match and she would “fly on official govt plane both ways and they will take care of hotels and all transportation.” Chelsea was a fully employed Clinton Foundation executive at this time.
In July 2011, Clinton tells Abedin that she doesn’t wish to fly on the same airplane with Michelle Obama on their way to Betty Ford’s funeral: “I’d be honored to speak. Is it ok that we and Mrs. O take two separate planes?”
A December 15, 2012, email chain shows that a committee of Clinton staffers, including Cheryl Mills, Huma Abedin, Jake Sullivan and Philippe Reines, was required to draft a “doctors statement” as to why Hillary supposedly fainted due to “dehydration,” causing her supposedly to hit her head and suffer a “concussion” in December 2012. The same committee then prepared a “discharge statement” when Hillary was released from the hospital.
“These shocking new Clinton emails show why the Justice Department should reevaluate, reopen, or reinvigorate Clinton, Inc. investigations,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “The casual violation of laws concerning classified material and noxious influence peddling show the Clinton State Department was ‘corruption central’ in the Obama administration. No wonder Clinton’s allies in the State and Justice Departments had been slow-walking and hiding these emails.

2015.07.13 21:55 maryssmith [24] [Spoilers] Belcheck is Jonathan the Sniper from Day 1.

In Season 1/Day 1 of 24, Jack Bauer encounters a guy named Jonathan Matijevich, who is an Eastern European sniper involved in the conspiracy to frame Jack as the assassin of presidential candidate Senator David PalmeThe Allstate Guy. Jack encounters Jonathan at the labor union breakfast where Palmer is speaking, after being forced to smuggle in the would-be murder weapon through Secret Service security using his CTU credentials and giving it to Jonathan-- the guy who is really going to kill Palmer and frame Jack for it, after forcing Jack to rub his prints all over the gun.
Jack saves Palmer by creating a distraction before Jonathan can shoot him but the Secret Service arrest Jack before he can stop Jonathan from escaping. Jonathan leaves the labor breakfast and promptly disappears from the plot. The follow-up book to Day 1 (Findings at CTU, set months after Day 1) says that Jonathan was not apprehended and is believed to have returned to hide out somewhere in Eastern Europe. This makes Jonathan the second-longest running at-large antagonist in 24 history, only an episode behind his Day 1 accomplice, Mia Kirshner's Mandy, who stole the identity of the photographer Jonathan posed as to gain access to the labor breakfast. Mandy is also the only character we know of who knew what Jonathan looked like prior to Day 1, as when we first see them together in the second episode of the series, she marvels at the skillful plastic surgery job that was done to turn Jonathan's face into that of the photographer Martin Belkin, whom Mandy murdered less than an hour earlier after stealing his wallet for Jonathan.
Mandy is pardoned at the end of Day 4 and goes off into parts unknown but then reemerges in Deadline, the novel that details the aftermath of Day 8. At this point, Jack Bauer is so out of allies and so in need of assistance that he hires Mandy (whose number is, surprisingly, in his cell phone) to help him fake his death to the Russians and escape out of New York. Mandy survives the novel, which is her last appearance to date so far in the series, and she remains at large and, presumably, willing to work with people who once arrested her, so long as she gets paid. Keep in mind that Mandy knows Jonathan from prior to Day 1 and that both of them are still at large and now fast forward to Day 9 aka 24: Live Another Day.
On Day 9, Jack Bauer resurfaces in London after having been on the run for four and a half years following the end of Day 8 & Deadline. Since he snapped on Day 8 and very publicly caused an international incident that gave him a reputation as now being a terrorist collaborator (which may or may not have been intentional, depending on your interpretations of Day 8), Jack operates underground as an apparently autonomous agent, no longer working for a government but for himself. He has infiltrated the world of Karl Rask, an international arms dealer, and become a high-ranking member of Rask's operation while trying to take out Rask's extensive terrorist client list in the process. Along the way, he has but one actual ally: a guy who rolls with him as an apparent personal bodyguard and assistant named only "Belcheck".
What we know about Belcheck is that he is Eastern European, Jack once saved his life and trusts him but doesn't consider him a friend (which he all but says to Belcheck's face in the Day 9 premiere), and that Belcheck is a member or former member of the Serbian mob, as observed by Chloe, who recognizes that he's killed four people for them based on the tattoo on his arm. Later in the day, Belcheck has no problem informing President Heller of the fact that he's not an American and seems to have some anti-American sentiments (meaning: he just did what he did on Day 9 because he was hired by Jack to do it and/or did it for Jack) and, when pressed for his name, says that it's just 'Belcheck': "One word, like Madonna." (The last cultural reference to icons of the 1980s was mention of Princess Di in a conversation between Mandy & the photographer in the first episode of the show.) Earlier on, Belcheck says this to Adrian Cross, long before anyone found out the truth about Adrian: "I know people like you. You pretend you're something. But you're not." You know, like guys who don't give their names because who knows what their real names are. Belcheck also helps Jack to set up Chloe, which would be rather ironic since Jonathan once set Jack up.
Belcheck is extremely skilled technically and an excellent shot and is seen with a sniper rifle on more than one occasion. In the 24 world, about 18 years have passed between Day 1 and Day 9 and Belcheck looks like what a man who had some minimal more plastic surgery after Day 1 would look like 18 years after-- he looks very, very similar to the photographer face Jonathan took on, which is likely because Jonathan would have had to have more surgery after he escaped to stay in hiding but not so much more surgery that his face was destroyed. The facial structure is also the same between the two men-- Belcheck is some thinning hair away from being Jonathan. Not only that but Jack was hiding in Eastern Europe prior to Day 9, from where Jonathan/Belcheck are from. Their accents also sound identical. As for how Jack and Jonathan/Belcheck could have crossed paths? That would be Mandy, who might not have even informed Jack who Belcheck really is. Part of why Jack might not fully trust Belcheck entirely is because of his affiliation with Mandy. On the other hand, Jack may well know exactly who Belcheck really is and, like with Mandy, he's forced to act as if he doesn't care in order to help cement his reputation for working now with known antagonists. Either way, since Belcheck survived Live Another Day, he is bound to pop up again in the future and this revelation would help to explain all the purposeful mystery they surrounded him with on Day 9.

Questions Answers
This is an intensely personal question I've often thought about asking you. You just have to just stay focused on what challenges you and what inspires you. And that's why I went to Broadway because I thought I'd get to explore new things. I'm not really somehow who goes back and re-watches old stuff I've done. I haven't seen any of the films since they were in the theater - originals or prequels. I thought the prequels are amazing by the way. If we were a garage band, they were a philharmonic. As George said, Star Wars is the most expensive small low movie ever made. Sorry, I think I got off on a tangent on this question.
You are going to be immortal, man. Long after all of us are dead, the image of you as Luke Skywalker will be like Superman, or Harry Potter, or Gandalf, or Jesus. Even if the films are remade, your depiction of Luke will always be a spectre over whomever is playing him. Great question. Well, I'm all those things. I'm certainly humbled. But's hard to really wrap one's head around. I didn't get into this business to be famous, I got in because I really like communicating. I wasn't even sure I was going to be an actor. So I look at that as Luke, not really as me. Luke is immortal and I'm just an actor who got the honor to play him.
Apparently Carrie Fisher let it slip that you guys will be in Episode 7, any response? The only character I know for sure is returning is my friend R2-D2. He hasn’t stopped beeping about it.
Hey Mark. Huge fan in just about every possible way, but I had to share this story and find out if it is true. I have this friend who used to be a plmber in New York city. He often claims to not only have done work for you, but that you are pretty close friends. So I had to share this story and ask. He used to work for this plumbing company and on occasion would do work for some high profile clients. Because of his professionalism and knowledge, the company would purposefully give him those jobs. He was telling me about being in your apartment and was halfway up a ladder and working on something in the ceiling of your bathroom. You had let him be and left the room while your kids played video games in another room. Now, for whatever reason, things became difficult and he was in the ceiling for a long long time. So he would stand there and listen to your kids complain about how difficult this part in the Legend of Zelda was. They were begging you to help them get past it and you either refused or you had trouble yourself. But he kept his mouth shut about Zelda and about how increasingly frustrated he was getting in his work. Now after a long time had passed you eventually came in and asked him how it was going. He stepped down the ladder, one by one, he wiped his hands off and said, "well Mark... the force just isn't with us" From his account, your wife could be heard a few rooms over howling in laughter as you stood there chuckling, but clearly sick of people making star wars jokes. He then informed you about how the plumbing job would need to wait until another day so he could buy more parts, but he was getting tired of your kids' troubles in Zelda and you let him beat that part for them. He says that you both became friends from then on. I don't talk to him very often anymore, but every time i hear that story i immediately want to laugh at him for making up something so ridiculous, and beg him for an autograph just in case it is true. So my question is, how much is he making up? and have you gotten better at Legend of Zelda? He's not making it up. It rings very true. I just asked my wife and she remembers completely. We had tons of plumbing issues there and she remembers laughing. The only part that seems true is the boys asking me for help with Zelda, as I was terrible at Zelda. I was only good at games like "Little Mermaid" and my kids would make fun of me that it was a game designed for six year old girls.
Mark, I'm hungry. Should I eat the BBQ chips that are kinda stale but sitting right next to me, or go all the way downstairs and make some chicken nuggets? EDIT: Please answer. I've been waiting all day to ask you this and I'm really hungry. Well, I would go down and make the chicken nuggets, but bring the chips with you, put them in the oven for 10 minutes or so while waiting for your nuggets, and you have the best of both worlds.
You've been married since 1978 -- and to the same person! What's the secret to having such a successful marriage? Well i just was lucky i found the right person. if you’re lucky enough to find your soulmate, you have to keep your fingers crossed. A really short manual would read “Don’t cheat”, because that seems to be where people break up. When you go through tricky periods you have to work on it and having children helps because you know you’re trying to find a way to make everyone happy. You know, she was my dental hygienist. I went in to get my teeth cleaned and that’s where we met. Good luck, by the way, Slunk!
Was it hard to keep the secret that Darth Vader was Luke's father? I read you were one of the few people who actually knew this before the premier. Irvin Kirshner brought me aside, and said "I know this, George knows this, and you'll be the third person who knows. If it goes out we'll know you leaked it." So i was terrified of being the one to ruin it. I remember when they screened it, Harrison turned around and said "I didn't know that! Why the f*&^ didn't you tell me?!" Im good at keeping secrets. Especially when the goal it to maximize the enjoyment of the audience. That's why I'm worried about episode 7, they're going after casting sheets! I'm someone who doesn't want to know what I'm getting for my birthday. My sisters would go through the closets at xmas, and i hated that. Im trying to keep the surprises for the movies, not for the internet. I hate spoilers, I like being surprised. There's a natural curiosity, and a competition to see who can reveal the most. I beg people, please lets keep it a surprise! Don't you want to be surprised? I know I do.
Thanks for doing this AMA, what is your best memory voicing the Joker? Oh gosh it's really hard to single out one moment. I love working when the whole cast is there because you get to do it real time start to finish. A lot of times with animation you do it one actor at a time, but doing the original series was like doing a radio play. And I love Kevin, he's a wonderful Batman and a wonderful friend.
Oh I just remembered another thing where I got to sing a really creepy version of “Only You”, a capella. That wasn’t something I expected to do as Joker - sing a song. But the Joker is never boring to me because he’s crazy. And if you’re crazy, you are unpredictable and you never do anything the same way. I was surprised how much I loved playing that role.
What is your favorite Lightsaber Color? I just worked with Samuel L Jackson and he reminded me he had a purple lightsaber, which nobody had, I thought that was cool that he got his own color.
My favorite is green, I'm happy with what I had. You don't need to give me lavender or raw umber or whatever.
Would you rather fight 100 Ewok sized AT-AT's or 1 AT-AT sized Ewok? Probably the one AT-AT sized Ewok, because you'd probably have a better chance, if you had a 100 little things they could swarm all over you like ants on a glob of honey. Maybe you'd have the chance of hiding and not catching his attention, or you could climb up behind him and hang on and hope he gets tired. Obviously I've given a lot of thought to this.
Did you ever expect Star Wars to be such a critical success? I didn't expect it to be a critical success, I thought people would like it, because it took so many elements from movies we were familiar with, pirate, cowboy movies, war movies, and added humor. That's the thing that got me. Science fiction usually isn't funny. They have an 8 ft furry dog driving a spaceship, he's naked except headphones, that's funny. Even if it doesn't get great reviews it'll be a cult movie. People will go watch it at midnight because its so unique. I thought it would be popular but never thought it would be on the cover of Time magazine.
Are you still upset that you weren't able to pick up those power converters? I get ribbed for that line because it was so whiney. And I remember at the time, I had to make it as juvenile as possible so that I can show how Luke matures later. So it should be embarrassing. It should be whiney and childish. But boy, has it come back to haunt me. I don't think I ever got the chance to finally pick them up.
How proud are you of the Star Wars Holiday Special? Did you know at the time of shooting it that it would turn out the way it did? Oh yeah. I thought it was a mistake from the beginning. It was just unlike anything else in the Star Wars universe. And I initially said that I didn't want to do it, but George said it would help keep Star Wars in the consciousness and I wanted to be a team player so I did it. And I also said that I didn't think Luke should sing, so they cut that number. And now, I think we shouldn't be ashamed of it. They should put on the extra of the DVD's - it shows how incredibly fallible we are! At that same time, it did introduce Boba Fett in an animated sequence, so it's significant in that respect. Plus Art Carney was in it, who is one of my favorite comedic actors of all time.
Mr. Hamill, when I was six, all I wanted to be was you (Luke) and save the galaxy in my starfighter. Who was your hero when you were six? I used to watch superman on TV, and i loved the idea of flying. i used to wonder if i wanted to fly like superman or peter pan. Peter Pan looked like it was more fun, superman was so bolt straight. And i loved Zorro, the old Disney Zorro. What is it with guys with secret identities who go out and fight crime? And James bond. I loved all that stuff.
I loved you as Fire Lord Ozai in Avatar: The Last Airbender. In your voice acting, do you prefer to play villains or heroes? I just look for really good scripts, and I thought Avatar was so good that it was sure to be canceled. It seems a little too deep, a little too intelligent for the kind of cartoon I was used to. So I was really delighted when it found an audience and it showed that parents watch what their kids watch, and that a serious show that dealt with important issues could find an audience.
Villains are more fun to play. When i first read Star Wars I wondered who was playing Darth, it sounded so fun to play.
I loved playing the Joker because he's used sparingly, you never get too much of him. And he creates havoc and then shows up 12 episodes later.
I just hope its a good script. Not that i have a good eye for what's popular. When i read the first script for The Regular Show i thought it was too weird for young people, it's surreal. I didn't think it had a chance but now it's on its sixth season.
What's the story behind how you got the role of voicing The Joker or how you got into voice acting in general? Well I'd heard that they were going to do and the model for the campaigns would be the Max Fleischer Superman cartoons of the 40's, and I'm a huge animation fan it knew it would be a much more sophisticated version. The gave me the part of Ferris Boyle in the first Mr. Freeze episode "Heart of Ice." What I loved about it, I thought it was so melancholy and so deep. Paul Dini wrote it and later got nominated for an Emmy. So I did it and I think what happened was that they were surprised what a fan boy I was, and how much I knew about Batman. I asked all these specific questions referencing the early comics.
So when they were doing the Joker auditions I think that played a big part as they asked me to audition. I thought no way would they have the person that played Luke Skywalker cast as the Joker - they are the quintessential extremes of good and evil. So I just assumed they wouldn't hire me so I went in with no apprehension. And I had been doing Amadeus on Broadway for the year. And so I was experimenting with that laugh for Amadeus and I brought it to the Joker audition and it player really well. And I felt cocky when I left and thought "That's the best Joker they are every going to hear - too bad they can't hire me." And then two weeks later when they called and said I got the job I immediately lost my confidence.
And then my friend told me you're pretty brave. And I said why is that? And he said I wouldn't want to follow Jack Nicholson on anything. And then I got even more scared. But fear is a great motivator.
Hi Mark! Possibly stupid question: Do you find yourself at home trying to move things with the force? Example: TV remote across the room. I ask this because I have done this many times hoping it would finally move. It hasn't. Yet. That's the thing, that's what fairy tales are made of. You wish you could do all these things, fly like Peter Pan, telekineses i think it's called.
You should always believe. Don't go through life being skeptical. One thing that makes the films distinct is how optimistic they are. The philosophy is very uplifting and very positive. it was a way to approach the subject of spirituality without knocking you over the head with it. The force could be religion, science, magic.
I love that people can make what they want of it, and that they could find courage in their life. I've heard so many stories about what a positive thing it's been for people.
Keep trying to make that remote lift, never give up. One day it will happen.
What would you consider your biggest accomplishment? Not rushing out of the room for a bowl of guacamole and a bag of potato chips.
(Big fan!) I always think of more personal than professional. I'm so proud of my 3 children and so happy with my wife and dog and little house and acre of land. I always think a day when you never get out of your pajamas is a win.
What's the Inside of a Taun Taun like? You know, warm and cozy. I also got inside a Bantha, those creatures that were outside the cantina. The inside of it was pasted over with newspapers and glue to give it substance, I thought, 'This is really odd.' I also got inside of Jabba, which was like a sauna bath, because it's like a big rubber enclosure. All the puppeteers had gone to lunch and I wondered, 'I wonder what it's like in there.'
Older Luke Skywalker: beard or no beard? Well based on what has gone before, I have a feeling it's beard, but I have no confirmation of that. My wife said if you grow a beard, you'll cover up your cleft chin. That's not something that occurred to me. But I can only guess. I've never read any of the novelizations or anything but someone said to me, 'you're married, you have children.' Based on Obi-Wan I would have guessed I'd be living in an igloo or something. He was more spiritual, he didn't have a wife or children. And when you find out one of the only eligible women in the galaxy is your sister, it really cuts down on your odds of hooking up with anyone. But that's not what these movies are about. The charm of the trilogy is it appeals to the child in all of us. It goes back to playing in your backyard. It's very primal, it's good versus evil, a high sense of adventure.
Hi Mark. I am a wish grantor for make-a-wish. Thank you for what you are doing for the org and kids. If you could change one scene from the original trilogy what would you change and why? There was a scene at the beginning of the first movie that was cut out. When you're first introduced to Mark he's on the farm and he sees the Robots, when R2 and C3PO eject he races to the club, and you see what his life is like on Tataouine. This beautiful actress calls him wormy. I loved it bc you saw that he wasn't well liked by his peers, and he bumps into Garrick Hagon, and Luke is really excited bc he has joined the empire, and Luke is so anxious to get off the farm and find his lot in life. He's thrilled that Biggs has joined the Empire, and feels as soon as he'd get the chance he'd join the rebel alliance. this shows that Luke is apolitical, and joining the empire is even attractive to him.
They changed to get to the plot faster, so now it goes straight to the 4th scene. The only place you can see it is the novelization of the screen play. With all the tweaking and adaptations, why not put it in to add detail to the story that's not there?
What is your favorite type of pizza? How was life like after A New Hope released in theaters? In New York, I never had a slice of pizza I didn't like. There are certain cities that have fantastic pizza, Chicago's another. Whether it's veggie or plain or pepperoni, I wish I could narrow it down.
What was your reaction when you first met Harrison Ford? Well I'd seen him in American Graffiti, and I did the screen tests with him. We just fell into our character roles. Luke idolizes Han Solo, it was such a great role because Hans was the cynic, he was the modern role in this fairly tale. It was just the right element in the stew for all the cynics in the audience.
I just thought Harrison was fantastic, so perfect for the part. We fell into the role of mentostudent. they couldn't have made a better choice, and he can do no wrong. He's got a great sense of humor, it was fun to try to make him laugh.
Hi mark! I have a date in a hour with my crush (since high school) , any advice? Well, I'm a little rusty in the dating department. But I would say, be yourself. Don't try to be someone you're not. Don't plan anything, be spontaneous. And be open, and fun, and let yourselves get to know each other as naturally as possible.
And needless to say, May the Force Be With You.
The age old question. Who would win in a fight: Batman, Luke Skywalker, or Skips? Well you know Batman is physically much more formidable, but Luke has that Jedi magic, maybe he'd use mind tricks. I hope it would never come to that, because I think I'd have a hard time beating someone like Batman. My only hope would be mind tricks or running and hiding.
What is your all time favorite movie? I don’t have an all time favorite, some of the movies that really impacted me as a kid were Hard Days Night, the Beatles first movie. I didn’t think I liked musicals and then I saw West Side Story and it just crushed me. I was 9 or 10 years old and it was so tragic. That one stands out.
I went to see The Tingler at a much too young age, and now you look at it and think how did that scare me? I met Vincent Price once, which was a thrill. And I mentioned the Tingler. I said when I was 9 it scared me to death and he said, 'wasn’t that a delightful bit of rubbish.'
And I love Laurel and Hardy and the Marx Brothers. I was voting on the 100 greatest films of all time for AFI, and I couldn't decide between Snow White and Psycho. That says it all. How can you compare those 2 films? You can't, it's all subjective. It's crazy to find the best anything.
What's your favorite soup? I like Anderson's tomato soup and french onion soup, although I'm not eating dairy right now so I can't have that great cheese on top.
Simple question that I ask on all AMAs, how are you today? I'm fine, it's exciting to do something new like this. I've answered questions on twitter but I've never participated in an AMA. So, I'm fine, and super excited to be doing this.
Now I'm still thinking about those bbq chips...
Mark, What did (Bantha) blue milk taste like? It was ghastly! Since it was a prop, I wanted to matter of factly have a sip, but they used this milk that doesn't need to be refrigerated. It was sweet. It's moments like that when I think, boy, I really am a good actor since I didn't gag. I can't remember the name, it comes in these triangular cartons, it's everlasting milk or something like that. I don't know if they still make it. It's sweet and syrupy and yucky. If you want to try it go to a camping store and drop some blue food coloring in it and there you go.
What's your recipe for a great guacamole? Lime juice and salsa. Onions. You really can't go wrong, you never make it the same way twice. One basic rule, no mayo ever!
What is your favorite thing about working with the Make A Wish Foundation? I love the feeling that you can give something back, bc you've been so fortunate in your own life. Working with MAW you feel like, gee, my real career feels so trivial in comparison. It makes you wish you could do that charitable activity all the time.
I love this organization. I've helped them over the years, but they’ll never be able to top Batkid, that was the most amazing feel good story. The way the community turned out. it’s something you can go to when you’re feeling particularly depressed about how rotten people are, usually when your’e watching politics. Then Batkid comes along. The mayor, the sports icons, rescuing the lady that was tied up, it was just too much. It was amazing. That kid couldn’t have been cuter if it was a cartoon that Disney drew.
If you'd like to help me support Make A Wish, and win a chance to tour Skywalker Ranch and hang out with me in LA, you can enter here: Link to www.omaze.com It only takes $10.
Do you like cats or dogs more? I like them both, but I have to give the edge to dogs. I don't want to offend cat people because I like them too, but dogs seem like they need you more. You can't have a cat as a pet, a cat can have you as a pet, but not the other way around.
Wookies or Droids? Just for the sake of loyalty, it would have to be R2 and C-3PO. Hans had the Wookiee. I love the fact that C-3PO was so unhappy being thrust into these adventures. He’d be so much happier working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. C-3PO was one of the funniest characters in those movies, I thought.
This is the first time im not too late for an AMA! Question: Was Yoda just as wierd IRL? ;) I never thought of him as weird, he was unexpected, because the audience and Luke both thought a Jedi Master must be 6'5" with a formidable physical presence. But that was the whole point, he was a little toad like creature. Frank Oz and the people who imbued him with life were spectacular, I loved that whole experience. I could tell it was a monumental character to be introducing in the 2nd installment, I loved it. The minute I looked at him, he was real to me. You notice that with small children, the puppeteer isn’t hiding what he's doing but the kids are zeroed in on Oscar or Grover or whoever, again its that childlike ability to believe and I never want to feel like I lose that. I was marveling at what a breakthrough puppet it was with the movement and the way they could build something like this, but if it hadn’t been for Frank Oz and Larry Kasdan writing that script it would have been a much different story. And I loved Yoda and still do.
You still here? Am i still here? pinch me! you think im in the kitchen with the guac and chips?
Do you ever have second thoughts about not finishing Jedi school ? Ha! I didn't know that i hadn't! Thats the problem, there are people who know more about the Star Wars universe than i do! people will scream at me if I get IG88's name wrong, on the movie it was just the medical droid. We called things the dust bin robot, we had pet names for things. People know so much more about it than i do.
I didn't go to proper Jedi school, I was just tutored by Obi-Wan and Yoda, that was the closest thing to school. Then i dashed off against obi's wishes, he didn't think i was ready. He was probably right.
Who has been your greatest source of inspiration? It's hard to pick a single person. My older brother, Alec Guinness, Sam Fuller, I don't know. The minute you say one person you think I should mention Harrison, George, Gary Kurtz, the list goes on and on. I love to be inspired by even the smallest aspect of someone's personality. Maybe they have a tenacity or wisdom that I lack. To pick one is impossible.
That questions inspires me to search my soul and contemplate.
Did you enjoy your guest spot on the Simpsons? Do you like how they poked fun about you, the fans and Sci Fi conventions? It was wonderful, I was such a fanboy, to know all of these characters from the show and then see them in person doing all these voices. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed it. On one hand, I wanted to be on the Simpsons, but on the other hand they said I’m playing myself. I became very self conscious. I asked, if I do this, can I play someone besides myself? There's a good trivia question: in the episode 'Mayored to the Mob,' who else do I play besides Mark Hamill?
Mark do you enjoy Guacamole? Love guacamole! My daughter makes a great guacamole, I make a great guacamole. I enjoy making it too.
Since Make a Wish just did "Batkid" any chance we'd see a "Luke Kid?" (or Jedi Kid)? Cause that. would. be. AWESOME. That would be a great idea! I’m sure as Disney ramps up awareness of episode 7 that would fit in perfectly. My hope is that we can bring back many people from behind the camera and in front of the camera. A Make A Wish Jedi kid would be great, and to involve as many people from the original trilogy as possible.
Hey Mark! Being as recognizable as you are, you probably have a lot of daily interaction with fans. What's the strangest request you're ever gotten from a fan you've met? There's a lot of nice people who ask me to sign body parts or go birthday parts - and I wish I could accommodate them all. The strangest one was a cab driver who kept tell about the anti-christ and how Luke was blocking Darth Vader's path to taking over the world. He wanted me to help out somehow. I wasn't exactly sure how, but he was very passionate about it.
Did you get to keep any props or memorabilia from filming Star Wars? I kept something from each film. From the first I kept my boots. I had to ask for them, I didn’t just take them! I kept the stormtrooper helmet that I rescued Princess Leia in. The ones that were commercially made last much longer.
I have little bits and pieces from each of the movies. I would never think of selling these things. I saw they were auctioning my pants from the first film for $44,000! They were just bleached out levis with the pockets ripped out. There were multiples made for me and my stunt double. That seemed like a really steep price.
What is your favorite vacation spot? I don't have a favorite, but my wife and i loved Bora Bora. Pretty much any new place you go, there's wonderful things to discover. SF, Boston, London, Australia. We don't have any one designated spot, just great memories from so many different places.
Since I love theater I love NY. We had an apt there for 9 years, i wish we had kept it.
Hi Mark! Thanks so much for doing this, I'm sure you're one of the most highly anticipated AMA's of all time. So it's no secret your resume is jam packed with awesome projects, but I'm most curious about your work on stage! Would you consider doing another trip to Broadway or even a tour? There's nothing more exciting for an actor than a live audience. I've done Broadway 8 or 9 times, and wouldn't rule it out. But it's a big commitment. It's really expensive and you have to do 8 or 9 shows a week. And people always ask how do you keep it fresh, do you ever get tired of doing the same thing every day? But it's a lot of fun and you have to find new things in it for yourself.
Hello Mark and welcome to Reddit, from the huge Star Wars fanbase over at /starwars . Thanks for doing the AMA. My pleasure! You know, Star Wars fans over the years have become so familiar to me. And they are so warm and so supportive, they're almost like family. I'm so grateful to them in so many ways. You're always taken aback because I don't think of it on a day to day basis, then you go to one of these celebrations or fan conventions. I call them UPF's, ultra passionate fans, and they are very special to all of us, me especially.
waves hand "You do not want to ask me any more Episode 7 questions." Haha. I’m not being coy, really. When I find something out, I’ll let everybody know. But nothing has been decided yet.
Whats your favorite type of music Oh gosh, I like 60s rock and roll, the Beatles, the Kinks, Rolling Stones, and Motown. It was a great decade for music. American rock and roll, British rock and roll, Motown. I have 4 sisters and 2 brothers so there was a lot of different kinds of music being played at my house. This one liked the beach boys, this one liked james brown, so I heard it all.
Hi Mark, the people on reddit were very kind to me when I did my AMAA, hope you enjoy this community. Speak soon I'm sure. Cheers, Thanks Peter, they've been great and I'm really enjoying it. I love you and you have been a life-long friend. And I'm convinced there's no one closer to a real life wookiee in the most positive sense.
Peter Mayhew Also, I loved those pictures you released! I've got a ton of old pics from the set upstairs that I want to go through now.
This is my dream. I feel like I'm on the Falcon with Chewie and Luke. Next time, we'll have to get Han on here.
